Variable Camshaft Adjustment

Variable Camshaft Adjustment

The function of the camshaft is to actuate the valves at the right time and in the right order, and therefore to control the charge cycle. By means of the variable camshaft adjustment, the timing of all valves driven by the respective camshaft can be shifted in the same direction. This means that, in engines with a double overhead camshaft, the size and positioning of the valve opening overlap can be influenced, with the result that characteristics in full-load and part-load operation can be enhanced.
